A Royal Visit His Highness the Heir Apparent of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, paid a visit to the University of Calgary - Qatar exhibit at the Qatar Career Fair. His Highness highlighted the official opening of the QCF in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a walkabout throughout the exhibition. >> more

Doha Literary Scholars to showcase their work at UCQ The Doha Association of Literary Scholars (DALS) is presenting a public lecture that will showcase the work of three of its members. UCQ Salutes Researchers University of Calgary - Qatar students, faculty and staff celebrated the awarding of research grants recently by the Qatar National Research Fund. The 18 undergraduate students that will be participating in the 4 projects that were funded received a certificate of recognition from Interim Dean Sheila Evans. >> more
Great Teachers Retreat is being termed a success The first-ever Great Teachers Retreat (GTR) to be staged in Doha is getting accolades from almost everyone who participated. UCQ, International Committee of Red Cross and Qatar Red Crescent form partnership to provide humanitarian assistance programs Doha, February 3, 2010 - The University of Calgary - Qatar (UCQ) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Committee of Red Cross and Qatar Red Crescent to provide humanitarian assistance training programs for disaster and emergency relief.>> more
Canadian Ambassador to Doha visits UCQ The University of Calgary - Qatar was honoured by a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to Doha, Gary Luton. The Canadian Ambassador is in process of establishing a Doha Embassy. Negotiations are in progress on a site. >> more

UCQ Writing Centre visits local high school University of Calgary - Qatar Writing Specialist, Martin Holock paid a visit recently to Al Bayyan Secondary School for Girls. It was at the invitation of Mai Bassiony, one of the instructors there. Holock and Bassiony had met at the English Teaching Excellence for Qatar (ETE) conference in November.>> more

Canadian Consul Visits UCQ Campus Faculty and staff at University of Calgary – Qatar are better informed about living and working in the Gulf following a visit by the Consul at the Canadian Embassy in Kuwait. UCQ Celebrates Garangou Music rang through the halls of University of Calgary-Qatar Sunday as staff and students celebrated the festival of Garangou. UCQ Welcomes New Students to Campus New Bachelor of Nursing students were greeted on Sunday August 30, 2009 as part of the University of Calgary-Qatar's Orientation. The interim Dean and CEO, Dr. Sheila Evans, congratulated the new scholars on their admission into this challenging field of study. Of the new enrollments, half are Qatari nationals and the remaining students originate from Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Tunisia. >> more
Happy Trails: Travel Flu-Free this Summer The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the H1N1 Flu Virus, or Swine Flu, as a pandemic with the latest statistics indicating approximately 36,000 people infected in 76 countries. The H1N1 Flu Virus is a strain of influenza most commonly found in pigs but which can also affect humans. >> more
A UCQ Internship Builds Experience and Confidence for Co-op Student Amer Abbas is giving high marks to the University of Calgary – Qatar for his internship in the Information Technology Department. “It has been one of my best experiences ever. I have gained so much knowledge in such a short period of time,” exclaims Abbas. The 22 year old has just graduated from the College of the North Atlantic with a diploma as a Programmer Analyst. >> more

UCQ collaborated with World Health Organization to assist State of Qatar in developing mental health strategy and policy Acting Associate Dean, Academic Dr. Marlene Smadu and Assistant Professor, Dr. Denise Malo met recently with Dr. Khalid Saeed of the World Health Organization to discuss mental health strategy and policy in Qatar. Dr. Saeed is looking into the mental health training and curriculum at Qatar universities. UCQ will be offering mental health/psychiatric nursing training and curriculum next year. >>more
