Many of you have asked, "What is a Learning Commons?"

Submitted by schatrath on 24 March 2009 - 1:54pm.

Learning Commons are often located in libraries in North America but they include so much more! By definition, a Learning Commons is an integrated service hub that makes it easy for students to get academic help. It often includes services from the library, writing centre, subject skills labs, and even career counseling. However, the actual services offered at any one university are determined  by what the local community of students need.

The same student-centred library, with in-person and virtual access to all the Web resources the University has to offer, is still here.  However, over the fall term, we also heard our students tell us that they need:

  • A quiet area for individual study and reflection, away from the computer labs and social spaces; and
  • A centre that can help students learn to write and prepare their assignments in a scholarly manner.

We are working to steadily increase the services that we can offer you and we will keep you informed as these become available.

We encourage faculty and staff, as well as students, to send us your ideas for further development of the Learning Commons.
